Foodie : Have lunch on Broadway

The area on Broadway around the VGH (hospital) is a fantastic mecca for food during the day and evening. There is every sort of Asian ethnic cuisine (“Afghan,” “Mongolian,” Japanese, different kinds of Chinese, Singapore, Indian) and that includes the very best Malaysian in the city at Banana Leaf.

Last Friday was an occasion for celebration and so some co-workers and I head to the Willow location for quick, professionally served cheap food in an eclectic, colourful environment – the servers wear Hawaiian-esque print shirts there.

Although there is more to the variety, three of us ordered the kari lamb/sayur lemak lunch plate (each $6), one of us ordered beef rendang/sayur lemak (also $6), and one just sayur lemak ($5). All the curries were served with an ample scoop of coconut rice.

Pictured at right is the kari lamb plate consisting of – you guessed it – curry lamb and coconut curry mixed vegetables. The lamb was boldly spicy while the vegetables were creamy and soothing on the palate after the assault. I had the beef rendang on a previous occasion and know it is wonderful with its melt-in-your-mouth tender beef that had been braised in the most fragrant of sauce.

Their lunch menu is a true steal – I would pay, say, $7 for that two-item plate but don’t let them know I said that….
