Cops don’t retire, they just work the Skytrain beat
I’ve seen Vancouver PD on the Skytrain on a fairly regular basis so I didn’t really notice when armed Skytrain Cops when they started riding trains, at least not until the mandatory pat-downs. Okay, so that part I made up. However apparently up until these Skytrain Police started patrolling the rails like seagulls behind a McDonald’s we were all in unspeakable danger.
The CBC reports:
Vancouver transit officials said it’s no longer enough to count on municipal police to keep the system safe.
The new force currently consists of 70 officers, who work in shifts of 12 to 16 hours to covered transit terminals throughout the rapid-transit system.
Eventually the force will grow to 91 officers, the vast majority of them retirees drawn from other police forces.
So apparently it’s not safe enough for unarmed cops, but they can be the ones that the RCMP and VPD won’t take anymore. This might be enough to stop your average angry hobo intent on snagging an iPod, but is it enough to really protect us? I mean we all remember what happened this summer in Gotham City when terrorists used their Skytrain / monorail system to try to release toxic fear inducing gas into the city. Had it not been for Batman and Gary Oldman the whole city would have been destroyed.
So I suppose this is a note to the transist authorities, forget grandfathers with guns and get us Batman and Comissioner Gordon.
