i HEART craigslist
A few months ago when friends were looking for places to stay in Toronto, Calgary, and Halifax, I referred them to the same resource I would use in Vancouver, Craigslist. I don’t know the dates of inception of Craigslist in the various cities but it seems to have better penetration in Vancouver (just look at the number of posts in each section) than in the other major Canadian cities and I feel like it’s a little to do with our proximity to the States and being on the western seaboard (do we use that term to describe this coast?) and the birthplace of Craigslist.
Reading Missed Connections is a bit like a whimsical movie where strangers destined to meet pass by each other unknowingly. I look to see if anyone has put a post about that cute girl with really long, straight black hair in a green corduroy waistcoat making a daily commute on the 99 B-line bus to UBC…. o.O (There hasn’t been one yet.)
I got my first Vancouver apartment through Craiglist because it was refreshing to not have to pay a membership fee to a site just to see apartment listings. And I’ve been trying to complete my furnishings with some previously loved furniture, but haven’t had much luck there - no responses to my inquiries, ever.
Finally, reading Strictly Platonic has shown that people are reinterpreting that page to oftentimes turn it into a forum about the ups and downs of living in Vancouver. As with any forum, however, the flaming and negative side is much more prominent. You should take a look and take a stand for Vancouver (if that is your position) - I’m not eloquent enough.
