Vancouver Radio
It seems there’s not a lot to listen to on the radio around town these days.
Assuming you’re not into top 40 pop or country, most of the music stations are out, and even a lot of the news stations (like News 1130 AM) are focused more on 20 second soundbites than any real in-depth content.
While driving across the city doing some Christmas shopping today, I set my car stereo on Scan, alternating between FM and AM bands, hoping to stumble across some marvellous gem of broadcast content, but found myself coming up short.
Podcasts are always an option, but I don’t want to give up on traditional radio quite yet.
I’d love to hear other people’s suggestions of things to check out. Bonus points for non-traditional music or for really insightful spoken word content. . . .

Try 690 AM (CBC Radio One) - it sometimes has really good programs. Unfortunately my job requires me to pay attention so I rarely get a chance to listen during the daytime…
I’ve been bitching about the sad state of radio in vancouver for years, which is why I put an mp3 player in my truck and have no preset radio station on the stereo. When I do listen, I’ll tune in to citr 101.9 UBC campus radio. The signal is always a bit dodgy (try moving the radio a foot to the left if you’re having trouble), but if you can find it, listen. Tons of variety, no commercials, DJ’s that actually know something about the music they play… it’s just about the best radio station in Vancouver.
Hmm… I don’t listen to the radio at all anymore. I stick to Podcasts. How I program my week and the Skytrain ride from work to home.
Monday: This Week In Tech and left overs of NPR’s On the Media from Sunday.
Tuesday: No work, no radio.
Wednesday: No work but I’ve got about an hour and some to kill walking to Golden Age Comics. I tend to listen either to the Dawn and Drew Show or Fanboy Radio.
Thursday: Fanboy Radio, the MacCast and Cinecast
Friday: BBC’s Fighting Talk, some Dawn and Drew
Saturday: KCRW’s Left Right and Center, Ebert and Roper
Sunday: NPR’s On the Media and whatever I haven’t finished up during the week.
Winter’s right, CiTR is good, as is CJSF (90.1 FM), the SFU radio station.
You can get NPR if your car radio is strong enuf (mine is.. Its at 94.5 I believe
You can get long discussions on coop radio which is 102.7, fairly leftist conservative in outlook
CBC at 690 Am is the CBC am service
105.7 is the CBC Fm service, which is mainly classical, but the weekends can be a bit more varied including Global Village which showcases all kinds of music from all over the world (This show Normally runs at 8:00 PM most nights, I believe, on the CBC AM service)
AM 1070 CFUN is seemingly endless talk about relationships.I have heard that the Canadian Forces broadcast this station constantly to the Taliban to make them surrender so be warned..
Cheers
