Final laps

As the last few days tick down until the election it’s looking like the best case scenario for Canada is a Conservative minority government. Polls though are even suggesting a slim majority for the party that’s claiming to be best for national unity [cbc]. Meanwhile the Liberals are trying to make sure everyone and their dog knows that the moment Harper wins we’ll be invading France as we become a puppet government of the United States [cbc]. The Liberals are also reaching out to the firefighters of Canada [cbc] which is nice I suppose.

The NDP meanwhile is trying to keep its supports from voting Liberal to stop a Conservative victory. I was lectured to last night about a) my claim that I was not going to vote and b) that if I did vote I’d probably have to vote for the Liberals in order to keep Harper from coming to power.

    “best case scenario for Canada?”

Jeffery: I’d like to encourage you not to vote. You’re doing good work.

I’m not sure how to take that. Obviously a Conservative government isn’t the best scenario at all, I meant that it’s looking like the best we can hope for given the poll numbers is a Conservative minority as opposed to a majority.

“Obviously”? You know, there’s a lot (maybe even a plurality) of voters who would disagree.

Jeffrey: I reiterate my previous encouragement. You’re doing what I consider your best case action for Canada. I suspect our opinions on the election-night result, whatever it is, will diverge.

Perhaps. We’ll see. Either way I can’t get excited by voting either for either Svend or Fry. I think it’s like the John Kerry versus Bush scenario if the Conservatives win, it’s not that Harper will have done a good job of an election, it’s just that the Liberals and NDP have done a fantastic job of being unappealing.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the Liberals do lose, and they go through a decade(s) long rebuilding process similiar to the Conservatives.

I don’t want to see that, but it sort of looks that way poll wise.
