Best Buy vs. Future Shop

Last night I drove in to the Coquitlam Best Buy store, as I had a gift card, and a head full of ideas for new things I’d like to pick up.

First off, I have to disclose. I’m a former Future Shop employee (shudder) and I know that Best Buy owns Future Shop, but the cultures are certainly different.

I was in that Best Buy for about 45 minutes, and I didn’t have employees crawling all over me every 30 seconds like I typically would in Future Shop. Which is exactly the way I like it. When I go into a store , I generally know what I’m looking for, but even if I’m not, I want to find it on my own. There were probably two people that asked me if I needed any help while I was in there. Definitely a better way to go.

Given the choice in the future between Future Shop and Best Buy, it’ll be the Best Buy that I go to first.

And the new toys? A new set of speakers for the PC and a copy of NHL ’05. Ah, more nights of PC-based hockey. Gotta love it.

    I tend to go to Future Shop just because its by where I work and one is closer on Robson to my apartment. It’s actually sort of depressing that the choices are FS (comission sales) and Best Buy’s non-comission sales. I used to shop at A&B Sound as an alternative but now unless I try to seek out specific botique type stores, like an authorized Apple Dealer for my computers, an HMV for my CDs, I’ve just sort of given up and accepted the FS/BB hegomony.

    I certainly agree. I just can’t bring myself to go into a Future Shop anymore. The staff hunt you down like a criminal. Every single one you pass tries to latch unto you. Damn comissions.

    I’ve noticed that in or around Toronto, Future Shops seem to be staffed entirely by people of Indian or Pakistani descend. Why is that? Did Best Buy want visible minorities shipped to Future Shop or something?

    Oh jeez, Jeffy. You’re one of them, aren’t you? :) Luckily I worked in the PC service department, not sales, so I didn’t have to go to the morning meetings. I sure could hear them all the way across the store, though.

    :-) No, my sister-in-law worked at a FS in Oregon for a while and the stories gave me the heebie jeebies. Figured I could get a rise out of any current or former employees with that one word. Sorry.

    I used to work at Future Shop in Oregon,USA and at the time they wereowned by Irianins. There training salespeople to be super agreesive, never customer sevice drivin. watch out for the floor mgr comming in to close the extended warranty.
