Geeking out over dance

When I received the email about this Saturday’s UBC Dance Club Dance Convention and Mini-Competition, I completely geeked out… over dance.

The itinerary looks something like this -

11 a.m. to 12 p.m. Waltz Technique Workshop
12 to 1 p.m. Rhumba Technique Workshop
2 to 3 p.m. Competitive DanceSport 101 (Information session about dance competitions)
3 to 4 p.m. Salsa Technique Workshop

Then from 6:30 until 9:00 p.m., there is a “club-closed” dance competition. That is, us newbies can get competition experience pitted against only other people in the club (which has over 1,000 members; maybe 500 at the newcomer level I’m at). While I don’t know which dances we are competing, the costume theme will be Cabana Fever.

Convention and Competition registration is available for the low price of… five dollars.

What in heavens does this have to do with Vancouver? The UBC Dance Club is open to UBC students (starting at $65 for 16 lessons over 8 months) and non-students alike (starting at $150). It is a non-pretentious - c’mon, it’s students and student-run! - and fun atmosphere for introduction to the fabulous world of social dancing.
