Surrey History Intimidates
One of the best things about working in a museum is that it’s now part of my job to know everything about the museum. In my case, I have to learn all about Surrey.
At first it is intimidating. I worked for the Port Moody Museum in 2000 and then from 2004 to this year. It’s taken me years to amass knowledge about one of the GVRD’s smallest cities. I am one of a handful of experts on Port Moody’s history but I still don’t know even 1% of all there is to know.
Surrey is huge. Five communities joined together to form the city. I have no idea where to start. Heck, all I know is the handful of stores to which my mom dragged me at the end of high school in an effort to find a grad dress. Oh, and the passport office with shorter waits.
A coworker mentioned that the city’s website has a lot of material. While only an overview, the Virtual Storyboard Tour has enough material to start off the beginner.
There are even three virtual walking tours, with my workplace neighbourhood among them.
So far, I took a mini kitcsch tour of Cloverdale (photos coming soon), but I will definitely do the more serious tour today. Might as well plunge right in and start learning the history of this town.
