Fatburger, originally uploaded by Jeffery Simpson.

Since I first saw the Fatburger joint open on Denman I was always wary of it. I enjoy a hamburger, no doubt, but there was just something about the name that… yeah well it’s got fat in the title. I guess if you’re on the heavier side (more Ricky Gervais than Stephen Merchant to use the hip Podcasting lingo) and concious about your body weight you don’t really want to be eating in a place with “fat” in the name.

Then of course there’s the movie called Fatburger that takes place in a Fatburger. I haven’t seen the movie but finding out that there really was a place burger place called Fatburger didn’t make me want to a) see the movie or b) eat at that place.

Finally I went the other day with my friend Nathan. We were walking down Denman and I had intended to take him to Vera’s for a burger but Fatburger was closer and upon inspection did not look a that bad.

More after the jump? You bet.

So eat there we did, and it was enjoyable. They’ve fallen into the 1950’s nostelgia vibe fairly hard, even having LPs on the walls like classic Rolling Stones albums and oh yes U2’s 2004 classic How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb.
The burger is good, the pop is refill friendly and the fries are either “skinny” or “fat”. I ordered skinny, ’cause you know I’m concerned about my weight.

I went to a Fatburger here for the first time last week with my brother. (Actually, we just went there to kill time since there was an accident and traffic more or less had us stuck in a shopping center. Got to watch the local fire department cut someone out of a car though. Nice little wake up call the day before his first behind the wheel driving lesson.) Back to the story — we got two orders of fat fries and two large drinks. It wasn’t bad, but by no means was it worth the $8 I had to shell out. For that price we might as well have just gone to the Starbucks next door!

Given the choice, I’m going to stick with In-N-Out since here in California we have that option.

No In-and-Out here. Just 1 Fatburger. $8 US? Wow that’s like $75 Canadian.

I know! I was mean and paid $3 of it in quarters though so I had my “revenge” (if you can really call it that.)

Fatburger is good, but I don’t think it competes successfully with Vera’s.

I like Fatbuger’s fries better than Vera’s. Vera’s has great burgers, but so so fries.

I went to Fatburger with some friends a couple months ago and I didn’t get my $8 worth. It took about 50 min to get our food, which ended up being somewhat burnt. Mind you, this was immediately before the Polar Bear Swim so it was crowded, but still, I was pretty disappointed.

Yeah 50 minutes is a lot. They’re a bit slower than I figure they should be, but that’s because the food is cooked as opposed to reheated.

I guess they just weren’t ready for the Polar Bear Swim.
