Pot Moody
Two weekends ago, Kwi Am Choi fell almost 300 metres while hiking up the Grouse Grind.
Generally most new blips like this whiz by without a second thought. Then, when I heard he was a Port Moody artist, I perked up. I live and work in Port Moody. Being in the cultural sector, I sometimes work with Port Moody artists. Then I read that Choi was the owner of the BoA Gallery. That’s when I remembered him. Last year he donated towards one of the Port Moody Station Museum’s displays.
Choi, among his many achievements, deserves to be remembered for another, unknown coup. In 2003, when he opened his gallery on Clarke Street in Port Moody, the city police force was busting grow-ops every week.
I had just moved back to Port Moody and picked up every scrap of information on the city’s fun scene. The laclustre BoA Gallery postcard lay on the tourist rack. I dutifully turned it over to find out more. The address was in Pot Moody.
Is that a typo? I thought. Or is it a clever joke on this drug thing that’s happening?
Cheers, Mr. Choi! Thanks again for the donation and see you on the other side!
