Oh Gawd… the Olympics have already started

Mayor Sam Sullivan was so pleased about being on television during the closing ceremonies of the Winter Games that he’s going to be flying the Olympic flag over City Hall until the games close in 2010 [cbc]. Not to be a cynic, but why don’t we pour some more syrup over the feel good glow? It’s four years people, let’s hold off on the celebrations until we find out with there will be a 2010 Games, and if it’ll mean we’re all homeless from cost overruns.

Montreal is laughing at us right now.

The cynic in me upon reading the flag is to be flown for four years is that some prankster’s gonna nab it, slash it, whatever, just for kicks. But apparently they are hoisting up replicas.

I want me a replica Olympic flag! =P

Not only that, but they’re replacing the flag every six months with a nice, new version of the same flag. Hooray!

I don’t care if they’re replacing it every ten minutes, it’s a little crazy to be flying it four years in advance. Maybe it’s tradition, but still.

Of course we still haven’t really gotten over hosting Expo, so I suppose it’s to be expected.

I know! Let’s bring the floating McDonald’s out of retirement just for the Olympics!

Now a floating McDonald’s I can get behind.
