Whistler Resort History
The Whistler Museum and Archives site has some interesting background information on the future Olympic site. Did you know that Whistler Mountain was called London Mountain and its name changed only in 1965? And that skiing on that mountain only started up on the Valentine’s Day of the following year? Or that the town site of Whistler was built in 1978 on what was the town dump? Or even that in 1976, Whistler won the Canadian nomination for the Winter Olympics?
While the Whistler Museum’s mandate is restricted to the pioneer history of the area, as limited to the resort history, the inclusion of the natural history of the area makes me wonder why the First Nations of the area are ignored. Has anyone been to the Whistler Museum? Is the lack of information on aboriginal peoples just a lack on the website’s part?
