Cuddly Haida Bear, or not
During last night’s meetup with the other Metrobloggers, I was officially taken to task for the fact that the plush Haida Bear is neither cute nor cuddly.
I have to admit, the stuffed bear’s eyebrows hint of a secret Eugene Levy parentage.
Either way, the fact still stands that the Haida Bear has a plush version, albeit a little sad and ugly, and the others, well, not so much.
Granted, I’d still totally spring for a toy version of the “Spirit of Haida Gwaii“, with removable Haida people and animals. That would rock.

The first time I saw the Spirit of Haida in YVR, I thought, “It looks just like the sculpture I saw ten years ago in the Museum of Civiliation (in Hull)… only in green.” So, you see, I saw so long ago a similar sculpture in white stone - do you know anything about that other one?
There are three of them, actually.
1) “The White Canoe”, the original white plaster cast at The Canadian Museum of Civilization, which you saw.
2) “The Black Canoe”, the first casting in bronze, which is located at the Canadian Embassy in Washington, D.C.
3) “The Jade Canoe”, the second bronze casting, which was unveiled at the Museum of Anthropology and later moved to YVR Airport.
And then there’s the $20 bill version, if that counts, but that’s a bit of a stretch.
That is not a cute stuffed animal.
