A Return of the NBA to Vancouver

According to Darren Barefoot, there is talk about bringing the NBA back to Vancouver by moving an existing team, possibly the Portland TrailBlazers.

While this provides interesting fodder for the sports talk guys and the newspapers, I wouldn’t put a whole lot of hope into it happening. To be perfectly honest, I think the NBA could care less about Canada. Including the Toronto Raptors.

But, the NBA has been known to put franchises back into markets that have been abandoned. The Minnesota Lakers moved to some place called Los Angeles. The New Orleans Jazz became the Utah Jazz and were replaced years later by the New Orleans Hornets when the team fled from Charlotte. Shortly after that they dropped another team into Charlotte, the Bobcats.

So, all in all, it’d be interesting to see if they could pull it off. Admittedly, it’s a longshot, and it’s hard to know what the fan base would be like considering the troubles that the Grizzlies had when they were here. Would I go? Maybe to a few games, although I have to admit to only going to one Grizzlies game (opening night vs., ironically, Portland).

Would anyone be willing to go if the NBA came back?

Sports for the matter cant survive in Canada. Hockey included. I dont know what it is about this country and its support for overpaid athletes. I mean we either dont support them at all, or on the other hand we only support loosing teams, (ie. any team with the word Toronto infront of its team name.)

But one thing that I want to see expanded as a sport in Canada and in the USA for the matter is the NLL, I think this would be the greatest thing. So much action and its just fun to watch. Unlike hockey where you only get to see the Leafs loose night after night.

Lacrosse? No thanks. First of all people supported the NBA here and we drew better for a crappy team than what the grizz draw for memphis with a winning team. The reason why the team moved is because after Heisley didn’t own the GM place and wanted out of vancouver. Orca bay wants to bring another team here because having two tennants in the GM place will make more money than just one.

I think an NBA team coming back to Vancouver would be a guaranteed success considering all the Canucks games are sold out and then some. Plus with the constantly growing population of Vancouver including thousands of wealthy asians who enjoy sporting events and the athletic hype of the 2010 games you cant go wrong. It’s a completely different market now then when the grizzlies were there, they just gotta make sure they dont take Big Country Reeves out of retirement and give him half the teams salary.
