When I first moved downtown I made a point of never driving to work. With a Skytrain terminal within 20 minute walking distance I wanted not only cut down on pollution by trim a bit of fat by being active.

Still though there are days when I’d like to drive to work, especially when I have somewhere else to be afterwards. Trouble is that Metrotown hates Metrotown employees, and tries to screw us at every oppertunity via random parking rules.

When I first started I was told that as long as I parked against the outer ring of the mall’s underground parking I’d be fine. By the holidays that had changed, and I got a warning that if I ever parked there again they’d tow my car. Since then I’ve been back to Skytraining.

I’m not the only one who has trouble. Metrotown changes their staff parking regulations almost monthly, sending out hard to read overhead maps showing where staff should park. The maps are impossible to read by anyone who wasn’t a black belt Boy Scout, and the fact that the zones change regularly makes it worse.

Everyone I’ve ever talked to who drives to work at Metrotown has gotten at least one warning letter. Many of those have had their cars towed. Last week our store manager, following MetTown regulations, had his truck stolen.

So hey Metrotown security, why don’t you spend more time stopping car theft and less time stopping mall staff from parking?

So that’s why I don’t like driving to work. Oakridge was nice, they let staff park anywhere, but Metrotown even without the typical parcade bullshit of paint chips and the like is a pain in the ass.
