The Canucks are now officially out of the playoffs [nhl]. Though the Western Conference is a hard division there is no excuses for a team with such talent not making the playoffs. I know the team will feel that they’ve given 110% or whatever sports metaphor bullshit they want to use, but the fact is that this team should have easily made the playoffs.
The Vancouver Canucks Op-Ed which was so optimistic all season is getting some mail from Oilers fans [vco] rubbing salt in the wounds since the Oilers did make the playoffs. I’m happy Edmonton is in, deep down they’re still my team, and the fact is the players in Edmonton wanted it more. The Canucks are a better team, the Oilers just would not give up.
In the weeks and months that follow this debacle, and lead to the start of the new season, there’s going to be miles of newsprint, blog screens and hours of radio call-in sports talk examining what went wrong, so there’s not point in doing a definitive list right now. However I think the team’s gone as far as it can under Crawford. In the end all areas of the team dropped the ball, and despite a wealth of talent the team just did not perform and Crawford is the one constant in all areas.
More on this later, right now I’m just going to join the rest of the city by going fetal and crying.
