Foodie : City of Excess I

When I first came to Vancouver, I went a little beserk over $5.95 18-pc. sushi combos that were the highlight of many a small takeaway-oriented sushi shop in the Cambie area near work. Coming from the land of H.S.T. (15% tax on nearly everything), that the grand total after 7% G.S.T. is only $6.37 made the packages all the more brilliant.

Then after trying out four shops within a one-block radius within two weeks, it became so tiresome. Obviously only the simplest and smallest single-ingredient rolls make it into the sushi sets - salmon rolls, tuna rolls, cucumber rolls, yam rolls, and the like. And who, but rabbits, actually enjoys a cucumber roll….? Certainly an inside-out (rice on the outside) roll with sesame seeds sprinkled on the surface was too fancy for these budget sushi sets.

Admittedly, 18 pieces can be awfully filling for lunch inducing a heavy food coma around 2:30 p.m. Nevermind the two times the fish was off and I got sick. =S

So it came to be that I gave up on 18-pc. lunches - sometimes it included a soup, too! - and became enamoured with $2.75 (G.S.T. included) 6-pc. California rolls from the sushi factory that is Ichiban-kan Express. Yum. It’s my weekly indulgence. Like the French, eat less, eat well, and enjoy every lovely bite.

Kappas. They are the green amphibious creatures after whom the rolls are named. They like cucumbers. They also like ripping people’s anuses out.

    (I’m not making that up.)

You know, Vancouver is easily the most accessible foodie cities. I think I read that somewhere. I have traveled far and wide through North America. Vancouver is a gourmands best choice. You can eat out cheaply and well here.

i just wish they’d stop putting mayonnaise in the sushi. the mayonnaise turns a perfectly delightlful takeaway treat into a big, gooey mouthful of blech. gimme my wasabi and fish, and everything will be fine.
