Chick Pea: you know, for kids!
When I’m not desperately searching out cheap deals with nearly psychotic fervor, I like to search out stores that take a really serious approach to the idea of creating an aesthetically pleasing shopping environment.
Yes, I did just say “aesthetically pleasing shopping environment.” Get over it.
Chickpea is just off the Drive, and it’s a beautiful place inside. Small selection, but very nice stuff for babies and children, mostly clothing. There are a few books and other child accessories (bedding, cradles, whatnot), but that’s about it.
The clothing is largely of what I would call the Ashley-and-Hudson style: my first nice outfit, complete with button-down collared shirts for the boys, and neatly-cut dresses for the girls. That’s not a criticism! Should I be lucky enough to have one or more children, this is exactly how I want them to be dressed. My lovely bride described the clothes as “retro-inspired,” but she meant the good kind of retro, not that nasty 1970s retro or the retro consisting entirely of frills and plaid.
What distinguishes Chick Pea is a fairly high commitment to making the store interesting to shop in. It’s easy on the eyes, there are interesting displays, and someone has put a fair bit of thought into making the store look tasteful.
A lot of stores could learn from this: to show a lack of interest in the shopping experience is to compete with Costco, Wal-Mart, and Amazon, and few boutiques can do that.
The website barely qualifies for the name, but the address and phone number are there. Enjoy.
