VIM Expo and Free Swag

Top three destinations to feel like a lazy, fat slug –
(1) Colorado (CDC identified it as the state with the highest proportion of normal weight people),
(2) Brazil (where 80% of all plastic surgery is cosmetic), and
(3) the Vancouver International Marathon’s (VIM) Health, Nutrition, and Wellness Expo at the Vancouver Convention and Exhibition Centre (VCEC).

True to its reputation as Canada’s largest marathon, the runners’ expo – attended by runners who arrive to pick up their race kit and their supportive fans – is stylish and abuzz in the VCEC, a top-notch venue.

It may be that the VIM is one of the early marathons of the season that there was a huge showing from the other marathons to come this year, displaying their hefty and gaudy finishers’ medals, each larger than the last – they arrived from Las Vegas, California, Honolulu, Seattle, Mexico, Puerto Vallarta, San Francisco, Niagara Falls, Victoria, Calgary, and Toronto, to name a few….

The founder of our favourite running store, The Running Room’s Mr. John Stanton, ran the store’s kiosk dispensing pace bracelets and free advice to runners. I even overhead a girl gush, “I loved your last book, read it cover to cover, and train to it!”

In addition to a live cooking demonstration, there were kiosks dispensing food samples including Real Fruit snacks, Kozy Shack pudding, Fusion coffee, Gu (?) power gels, Pete’s Tofu smoothies and cake, and Vector cereal. Non-edible freebies included VIM shoelaces (when you’ve been to enough expos, this is a really cool giveaway), Claritin tablets, and arthritis rub. And for non-free accessories, VIM swag was also available at typically heart-breaking prices for wine glasses(?!), mouse pads, computer totes, clothing, and countless other items adorned with Reg Davidson’s “School of Salmon”-theme.

Altogether, it was a fantastic expo (and possibly marathon?) to kick off the Marathon Season. I would have told you earlier if I had actually made it there before the last day.
