There’s a party tomorrow for BIFF’s first birthday.

BIFF is Burrard Inlet Fan Fellowship, a weekly get-together of science fiction and fantasy (sf&f) fans on the North Shore that meets up at Eighties Restaurant in North Vancouver every Friday beginning at 6:30 pm. I’ve been attending BIFF pretty regularly for most of its existence and have been enjoying myself greatly. Full disclosure: I once tripled BIFF/FANS’s attendance in its early days by bringing a copy of the Star Wars Holiday Special to show. People like watching horrific trainwrecks.

The first meeting of BIFF (then called FANS: Fannish Activity on the North Shore) was on the second Friday of July 2005. This makes tomorrow (Friday 14 July, the second Friday of the month) the first anniversary of BIFF.

And so, BIFF is celebrating its first birthday tomorrow evening at its regular location (Eighties Restaurant) and time (6:30 pm onwards) with a BIFFday cake (both wheat- and nut-free, for those with allergies to either) and is encouraging people to come in costume, and to “generally be prepared to have a good time”. (Newcomers welcome any time, no matter how new a sf&f fan they are or how casual their interest.)

It’s a good time to be a science fiction or fantasy fan in the Vancouver area at the moment. Local sf&f fandom appears to be in a Renaissance which (as far as I can tell) began early last year and really started flourishing in the second half of the year. There has been an explosion of events and activities, not only by individual groups and fandoms, but coordinated, cooperative efforts by different groups coming together to put on a show and have fun doing so. But this is a topic for another post. If you’re coming to the BIFFday party tomorrow, I’ll be there–come by and say hi.
