Battle of the Bands at the VPL (Muggles welcome too)

Saturday continues to be over-booked for events. Here’s one more:

The Vancouver Public Library is hosting the Battle of the Wizard Bands at 2 pm on Saturday 15 July at the downtown Library Square. It’s going to be Harry and the Potters vs. Draco and the Malfoys.

There’s a serious goal behind the fun, though.

The bands’ goal is to encourage reading and celebrate literature. Harry and the Potters has a summer reading list on their news page, and Draco and the Malfoys break kayfabe briefly to explain their role in the event.

Having got that out of the way–is there not just something feel-good about indie/punk/progressive bands singing songs about books? And playing not in stadiums or concert halls or bars, but in “libraries, bookstores, basements, art galleries, theatres, hot dog jamorees…, and living rooms”?

Only one show in Vancouver! Free! All-ages! Muggles welcome too!

Some members of the local Harry Potter Meetup group Muggles for Magic will be in attendance, likely in Hogwarts robes–not that that’s necessarily any help in finding them in the crowd.

And if you can’t make it yourself, you can still listen to the music of both bands (Potters, Malfoys) via their websites. They’re not half bad. Really. But you might have to be a HP fan already or be one of those hardy souls who enjoy, or at least can stand, filk.

So, does this mean we’re halfway to the book-centred culture envisioned in Jasper Fforde’s “Thursday Next” series?
