Events: Central City Surrey Edition

After winning numerous national and international awards for architectural design Central City [cc] in Surrey was then deemed the largest unoccupied office space in Canada when ICBC pulled out of the project. hmf.

With it’s proximity to the Skytrain (yes, did you know the train goes all the way to Surrey?), shopping mall, brew pub [ccb], offices and now with the launch of SFU’s Surrey campus this summer [sfu] Central City is starting to liven up.

Let’s face it – Vancouverites just don’t usually make it out that far or they let the stereotypes get the best of them – so here’s some potential incentive to visit Surrey this summer. [surrey.ca]

They’ve kicked off the Coast Capital Plaza Concert Series [plaza] featuring matinee shows which run from July 7th to Sept. 9th. A good time for the family to get out enjoy some tunes. Click here for the schedule [pdf]. If you are unable to make a matinee show, stay tuned to the City of Surrey Events page [surrey] for many more ‘things to do’.

Coming up this weekend:
Guildford Community Fair [fair] in Hjorth Road Park.
Family Day ARTS 2006 [art] at the Surrey Art Gallery.

You’ll soon find out that this City of Parks isn’t as scary as it seems…. I promise.

Is that… LuthorCorp? I heard it was used in Smallville. It’s a very impressive building indeed.

Uh huh, Surrey (Cloverdale) is the home of Smallville. This building was in Catwoman and IRobot. Oh yeah and it was in Fantastic Four too :p

Interestingly enougly, SFU has celebrated the opening of the Surrey campus before. Its been active for years. I guess this “grand” opening is bigger and better, and a nice way to end their 40th year anniversary celebrations.

Yeah they were currently operating out of the old Extra Foods/Zellers spaces – they’re celebrating the move into the big fancy tower now.

Bravo for answering my question about what’s happening in Surrey! BTW, the Tour de Delta is this weekend as well. I know Delta isn’t Surrey, but it is south of the river.

For some Vancouverites, anything outside of the downtown core (or perhaps, for the braver ones, east of Commercial) is the boonies. I once told someone of an event and she initially was interested, but that interest disappeared immediately when she found out it was in Burnaby. “Oh, I don’t want to travel all the way to Burnaby!
