Rhizome Cafe

Yesterday evening I attended the opening of a small artshow at the newly opened Rhizome Cafe, located in the area of Broadway and Main. The show is small, and features an ecclectic mix of work (such as the photo above) by local artists who live and work in the Mount Pleasant area.
Much of the evening was spent listening to people speak about the neighbourhood, its history, and the strong sense of community that exists there. I was really impressed by the strong feelings people have for this neighbourhood and how Rhizome Cafe intends to position itself as a community-oriented space. The following information is from their current flyer:
- Our meeting room is available for use by community groups for meetings and classes
- Our workshop program supports people with talent to share but no teaching experience. We help plan and promote arts- and community- building workshops held in our meeting room
- We partner with progressive organizations and community groups to host events, forums, film screenings, and more
- We host performances and showcase the work of local visual artists
And lets not forget the food…. I didn’t sample anything from their menu because it was well after the dinner hour when I arrived, but I plan to in the near future. Nothing on the menu was over $10, with everything made fresh from organic and local ingredients. The grand opening/one month anniversary of Rhizome Cafe will be Sunday July 30th at 7pm, featuring food, music, and no doubt, lots of local talent.
