Woodward’s (Part II)

Update: Members of the Woodward’s Flickr Group [Flickr: Woodwards] were able to catch the implosion of the historic Vancouver landmark [mbv] earlier this morning. Photo (Above) Property of Photocat62.

On top of the really great pics documenting the occassion, one local blogger [] has video footage of the event, taken from a construction job site in the area

(note about the video, as mentioned it is from the job site, so be sure turn off those speakers before showing it to any young’uns due to the nature of the language used by spectators – it’s not that bad but you know, just in case… :p)

Calling all graphic designers

The 2010 Winter Olympics are looking for a mascot.

I just naturally assumed these kinds of details had already been taken care of. But according to a Canadian Press article, the field is still wide open. Any aspiring graphic designers looking for a career-making opportunity ought to check out this link.

In the past, cute animals and a few characters not immediately recognizable as any Earth-resident species have had the honor of running around being cute for our Olympics spectators. Since our Olympic logo, the Inukshuk, is more about Canada (well, sort of) than Vancouver, how about a mascot that actually represents local wildlife – perhaps a killer whale? A sea otter? A seagull? Just a suggestion.

Woodwards Goes Down (Again)

The Woodwards building – once full of department store shopping goodness, will be reduced to rubble this weekend.

This Saturday, Sept 30, 2006 @ 8:30 am (on Hastings and Abbott) you can witness the implosion of what’s left of the building.

Most of the building has already been stripped and the rest will collapse after explosive devices are detonated to bring down 48 steel columns in the basement… The original 1903 structure is being saved because of its heritage value. Construction of a new mixed-use project valued at 300 million dollars will begin early in 2007 [CKNW]

Taste of Health

I am probably not the best person to be writing this event listing – I don’t think I could ever be a vegetarian, vegan or otherwise since a nice juicy steak can make its way into my belly anytime it wants. I am not, however, opposed to eating well, being eco-conscious and living a healthy lifestyle.

This weekend EarthSave Canada presents: Taste of Health Food Festival 2006 – September 30 – October 1, 2006 at the Croatian Cultural Centre (3250 Commercial Drive)

The 8th Annual popular Taste of Health Food Festival includes exhibits, workshops, presentations and food demonstrations to showcase plant-based foods [Vancouver Vegetarian Association]

From 10:00am to 6:00pm on Saturday, the event will feature well-known chefs, cooking displays, community booths, book fair, a kids zone and more. It costs $7 and is an easy 10-15 min walk from the Skytrain. Click on either of the links provided above for directions and schedules.

Wine Tasting – Cancelled

bytheglass.gifI was browsing my usual ‘it’s Friday morning at work and I wanna know what’s going on this weekend’ website and found the “Wine Tasting Festival” in Yaletown. The $30 event was schedule for today, the 29th and tomorrow, the 30th.

Fraser Valley by the Glass is the premier showcase for the award-winning wines of the Fraser Valley in British Columbia. The Fraser Valley produces stunning red and white wines as well as premium fruit table wines and fortified desert wines.

I followed the link to the site and the following appears:

Fraser Valley by the Glass has been cancelled. We apologize for any inconvenience that this may cause. All monies paid for tickets will be promptly refunded. Questions can be directed to us at 604-637-4215 [bytheglass]

Sorry, no wine tasting festival this weekend (except for over at my house where we have a couple of my husband’s birthday presents left over).

USL Championships for our ‘Caps

Our local United Soccer League boys, the Vancouver Whitecaps are over in Rochester, NY for the USL Championships.

This is the first time the Whitecaps have reached the USL First Division Final since joining the league in 1997. They have reached the semifinals five times.

The White Caps were back East playing the Montreal Impact in a two game series to reach the final. The first game (last Sunday) was a 0-0 draw but later this week the Caps pulled out a 2-0 victory.

The Whitecaps advanced to the Championship Final in dramatic fashion, scoring twice late in extra time to defeat the host Montreal Impact 2-0! The Whitecaps will now play the Rochester Raging Rhinos in the Final on Saturday, September 30, in Rochester.[whitecapsfc]

You can catch all the action vs the Rochester Rhinos this Saturday at the Rio on Broadway (arguably THE place to for futbol action in town… aside from Swanguard)

Saturday September 30, 2006 @ 4:00pm – Location: 1660 East Broadway (click for more details)

Update: You can listen to the game on AM730 and I should not fail to mention the Vancouver women won the W-League crown earlier this season [cknw]

** Amber Alert ** – One year old child missing

Please forgive the cut and paste. If this post helps bring this child back to her mother, it will be all worth it.

DELTA/CKNW(AM980) – Police have issued an Amber Alert after a one year old child went missing from her home.
It’s believed the girl’s father took her while she was with a baby sitter.

Police fear for her safety due to drug use by the suspect.

He is John William Martin, six feet-two inches, 161 pounds. He’s Caucasian with blonde hair and blue eyes and a freckled complexion.

Police are looking for a green 1998 Chevy Malibu sedan, BC licence plate 317-GTK.

Here is a picture of a green chevy Malibu:

Wizard Rock returns (Remus Lupins concert)

Wizard Rock returns to Greater Vancouver with a Remus and the Lupins concert tomorrow (Friday 29 September), at 8:00 pm, in Richmond at the Thompson Community Centre, 5151 Granville Avenue.

To think that a few months ago, I hadn’t even heard of wizard rock. Now this is my third post on the topic in as many months. (Earlier posts: 1, 2.)

Vera’s has a Food Challenge: The Unicorn

Remember when it was revealed in February that I was looking for a food challenge to undertake? Of course you don’t: you’re not an obsessive tracker of me or the metblog; you have a life. What a silly question.

But no thanks to you, I found one. The Meetup on Tuesday night wandered past Vera’s Burger Shack. And there I discovered The Unicorn.

Cutie Pie

In my ongoing search for all Vancouver things cute, here is this window from a Granville Street pizzeria:

Cutie Pie

Altogether now: Aaaaaaaaaaaaawwwwww!!!

As for what exactly it’s a picture of, I am guessing one of the cute worm things from Howl’s Moving Castle. Or were they the cute worm things in Spirited Away? Or the worm things swarming the crazed boar at the beginning of Princess Mononoke?
