Quest Food Exchange = Awesome

When walking past Vancity, I was approached by an amiable young fellow who asked for a moment of my time. It seems that Vancity is going to contribute 1 million dollars ($1,000,000.00!) to a local organization deemed worthy by its members.

So I stumbled upon the website for Quest Food Exchange. This is an organization that takes food destined for landfills and instead puts it in the bellies of needy Lower Mainlanders!

In 2005/06, Quest rescued $7.15 million worth of food — that’s 550,000 pounds of fresh vegetables and fruit, meat and fish, baked goods, and other staples per month — that would have otherwise gone to waste. Using this rescued food, Quest fed more than 45,000 people per month. Yet we’re still capturing only one per cent of the food being wasted.

What a brilliant idea. Less waste for the landfills. More food for the needy. Who could ask for anything better?

So if you are a Vancity member, I recommend that you cast your vote for this organization. You can find out more here.

Or perhaps its time to volunteer? They’re looking for web designers, writers, and all manner of other volunteers!
