Media Club Experience

Although I have only been to the Media Club once before, I knew tonight’s performance was going to be quite the intimate one. It’s a great little venue, tucked away behind the Queen Elizabeth Theatre.
Over the last couple weeks, a co-worker of mine kept playing these tunes in the office and everyday I would ask “who is that?” well it turns out that artist was Mat Kearney. Originally from Oregon, now hailing from Nashville, the up and coming singer/songwriter has been a hot topic lately even getting a song played on the TV series Grey’s Anatomy and buzzing his way around the web.
Turned out that this was an “industry night” at the Media Club. I’ve never been to one before and I doubt I’d wanna go again. We bought tickets and waited in line for about 45 minutes then were let in to mingle with the folks there on business. It seemed as though only about 20 people actually paid to get into the event because they were fans.
By business I mean, they do this weekly - they come for the drinks, for the status, to shmooze, to make some contacts and network (this was the impression we got anyway, from talking to some of them). I suppose that’s just how it all works, eh? The only problem we really had was that while the artists were performing, the “industry” was talking.
The evening dragged on a little since show started late. This was due to the bands being held up at the border on their way here.
Mat Kearney played all his “hits” and freestyled a bit in some songs, mixing his Coldplay type rock with hip hop. He talked a little about their “experience” with the border guards, how he’s never seen so many Porsches in one place and that Vancouver has THE best noodles.
My husband really prefered the opening band, Griffin House since he had a more ‘organic’, less produced feeling to his music (it was also quite politically charged).
All in all, I love going to see live music - it was a fun night but definitely a different experience from what I’m used to. I’ll be back to check out the Media Club in the future but I’ll be mindful of what other events are going on in the background.

Wow. Finger on the pulse!
Meh.
