Redwood Park

redwoodresize.jpgWhat better way to feel all Fall-like than to trek through a forest of evergreen and deciduous trees, leaves crunching beneath your feet and the air crisp and clean.

Yesterday my husband John and I ended up in South Surrey, just off the Pacific Highway - 176th street. It’s called so because it used to be an extension of the same ‘Pacific Highway’ scenic-route takers would traverse on their way down through Washington, the Oregon Coast and into California. The area was the site of the first settlements in Surrey and is rich in history.

If you turn off 176 and onto 20th Avenue, you will find Redwood Park:

80 acres of land owned by deaf twin brothers, David and Peter Brown in the late 1800’s, the land was given to them by their father on their 21st birthday. Around 1893 they started planting the beginnings of what amounted to 32 different species of trees from around the world, including a grove of Redwood’s from seedlings.
They were particularly interested in evergreens and began to collect seeds and seedlings from as far away as Russia, Austria, Japan, France, Italy and California.

They decided to build a two-storey treehouse to live in, it was rebuilt several times because of fires. They donated the land to the City of Surrey, the original treehouse has now been replaced [greatervancouverparks]

It is expansive and full of so many different types of trees that you would really not expect to find in that area (or in BC). There are winding paths, open fields, and all unique species of trees are labeled. It’s a great time of year to check it out since surrounding the park there’s the site of the first Organic Farm in the area and many more farms boasting corn mazes, hay rides and of course, pumpkins.
