The “beloved” Spirit Bears serve a purpose, other than being a backdrop for tourists snapping pictures and playthings for locals. 30 of the bears were auctioned off last night to benefit the BC Lion’s Society’s Easter Seal [1] operations and the Canucks for Kids Fund [2].
“Kromode,” a chrome bear, created for Teekay Shipping by artist Arnt Arntzen sold for 40 thousand dollars. “Jeanie, Whistler spirit bear” created for Telus by artist Gloria Masse went for 50 thousand dollars. All in, the 30 auctioned bears raised a total of 546 thousand dollars [cknw [4]]
The remaining bears are being auctioned off on the internet and from various other locations in the Lower Mainland.
Opening October 11th, 2006 and closing during the week of November 9th to 12th, 2006 there will be approximately 88 Spirit Bears from Vancouver, Whistler and Victoria auctioned through the Internet. The balance of the Bears will be auctioned Live at one of the 5 Live Auction & Gala’s [Spirit Bears in the City [5]]
