A picture says a thousand words

iwo jimaSo, if you haven’t already got something to do tomorrow night, there will be a free public screening of the award winning documentary Beyond Words: Photographers of War from 6-8pm at SFU’s Harbour Centre campus as part of the School of Communication CounterCulture Series.

How many world conflicts can you think of that don’t have at least one powerful image associated with them? Far from being aloof like print news, images have the power to capture and record in a small space abstract things like pain, fear and vietnamvictory far better than a body count ever can.

War photographers have brought us a wealth of images that have come to define the way we think about the events they depict, but how often do we see the people behind the cameras, and how often do we hear, in words, what they think?

Somehow I have a feeling it’s not the feel-good movie of the year, but looks like it’s worth a watch if you can swing it.
