The Canucks sell out

So many ways that can be true, eh? But in this case, I mean that the Aquilinis have purchased John McCaw’s half-share of the team, leaving the local family as the sole owners.

What does it mean? Well…

My first-cut guess is that for McCaw, this is a pretty simple case of buy low, sell high. The Canucks are at a peak of popularity. For the Aquilinis, local developers made good, I suspect a combination of business (the team certainly looks like a rather tidy and profitable little franchise) and sentiment simply made them, as the saying goes, want it more.

It’s been popular to rail against John McCaw’s apparently indifferent ownership style (he sure is no Steinbrenner…) but the recent record of the Canucks has been vastly better than the team’s historic averages.

The Aquilinis only bought into the team in 2004, and now they’ve got the whole thing to themselves.

Forza Canucks,
