The RCMP are urging the public not drive on Hwy 1, between North Van and Abottsford. There are trees down all over the place and tons of flooding. It’s just crazy-dangerous. For info on traffic info try the GVRD site (that also has traffic cams) and DriveBC.
The intense rainfall is caused by the Pineapple Express, a subtropical jet stream that blows humid air from the Pacific Ocean to the region. In some areas, storm clouds have dumped up to 350 millimetres of rain since Thursday. [CTV]
There are over 200,000 people without power in Surrey, Langley, Burnaby, Maple Ridge… and the list goes on, check BCHydro’s site for updated information. BC Ferries have canceled all sailings and many streets in all areas are closed. Winds up to 120km/hour are keeping those on the Island indoors and on alert. There was also a Tsunami warning [canada.com] this morning up and down the coast. Words of advice with another storm expected on Saturday: Make this a ’stay at home and watch movies’ weekend (but have flashlights and candles nearby)
