Dragon Boys

Dragon Boys, a four-hour CBC drama about Asian gangs in Vancouver, shows tonight and tomorrow.

With all of the seemingly random property crime that has besieged our city for the last while, it’s good to remember that there is an organized bunch behind it all – and they’re making lots and lots of money. This is a boom town for gangsters, Asian and non-Asian alike.

I don’t know whether the show will deal with the issues in any in-depth way. On the other hand, I hope it stirs up some debate.

Lots of Vancouverites use drugs socially, thinking it is no more harmful than smoking or drinking.

Healthwise, that’s pretty much true. But socially, it’s not even close.

The next time one of your buddies smokes a joint at a party, you might remind them that the gangs that produce and sell the drug use their cash to finance their gun purchases, among other things (human trafficking, prostitution) – which leads to more bad things.

So long as drugs are illegal in this country, the gangs are going to make huge profits and use those profits to finance other criminal behavior. Until they get legalized, social drug users aren’t really making a protest statement against unfair laws (since there are far better, legal and public ways to lobby the government) – they’re mostly just making the city a worse place to live.

    Blink. Blink.

Did you just argue for the legalization of drugs. Holy shit, I need to buy a lotto ticket. Pigs are flying and hell is freezing over.

    I tease.

    I tease.

But seriously I’m buying a lotto ticket.

Lame, welcome to the internet. I understand you’re new here. You’ll be getting your complimentary packet of Hello Kitty Fan Fiction and Harry Potter slash fiction in the mail within the next week.

It’s to help get you used to the horrifying things you’ll be seeing on the internet. There’s some good things too. I like iLounge.com and homestarrunner.com myself.
