Miss Canada fighting injustice in Iran

Former Miss Canada pageant winner (and Vancouverite) Nazanin Afshin-jam has organized a petition to save the life of a young woman who shares her first name.

Nazanin Mahabad Fatehi was sentenced to death by the Iranian Courts for stabbing one of three men who attempted to rape her and her 16 year-old niece. Some might remember Iran’s rough justice in the case of Zahra Kazemi, a Canadian freelance journalist who was beaten, tortured and raped before she died in 2003 while in custody in Iran. No Iranian official ever faced punishment for it, although some of those involved have since been promoted.

It’s not the kind of country that is likely to cave in to international pressure, but as Amnesty International can attest, such efforts do help on occasion. Good luck, Nazanin.
