The Second Robin of Spring

the secret life of Robins

For the second day in a row, I was greeted by birdsong as I let the dog out for its morning constitutional.

The sound of birds at dawn is one of those inconsequential things that fades into the background until you realize, after its Spring return, that you haven’t heard it for months.

It’s not exactly an intimacy with nature, but I think most suburbanites develop a sense of season, however bizarre. For me, it revolves around a few key signposts: the first and last bike commutes entirely in daylight; the first bike race; berry-picking and jelly-making seasons; snowfall; and now, the second robin (or whichever songbird it was) of the year.
