Since Facebook exploded it’s been pretty fun to dig around and just see what and who you can find. It’s a combination of Myspace, Classmates but oh, it’s so much more. I haven’t gotten too much into it (meaning, I don’t write on someone’s wall every day or update my status hourly) but I have found a few uses for it.

I came across two groups, “You Know You’re From Surrey When…” and “You Know You’re a Vancouverite when… “. These lists have probably been passed through forwarded emails since 1998 but within each there are a few gems. By “gems” I mean those memories and landmarks that go far beyond stereotypes and regular perceptions. Here are a few of my favourites since they go beyond the drugs, The Dell, and 15 year olds with babies.

You Know You’re From Surrey When…

6. You know that Surrey England is also right across the river from Westminster.
11. You’ve helped paint those yellow fish on the road.
10. You know the Serpentine and Nicomekl are where all those storm drains with the painted yellow fish drain into.
15. You know that annoying kid doesn’t live in White Rock, he/she lives in South Surrey
16. You know that Fleetwood, Whalley, Guildford, Newton, Cloverdale, and South Surrey are all in one city.
33. You know every spire in Guildford mall
34. You don’t pay to swim at outdoor public pools.
37. You’ve been to a birthday at Stardust.
