Back to the Hamilton Street Grill

Back in January during Dine Out Vancouver I went to the Hamilton Street Grill and blogged about the experiance [mbv]. It was a generally positive review though it ended on a negative note when I called the steak that I had “bland”. The service was great, the sides were great but the main course was in my opinion less than great.

At the time the resturant’s owner Neil Wyles jumped in on the comments, and I was quite impressed that a) he was not a jerk about the review and b) he’d be interested in finding out why I did not like the meal. Most places I have a bad meal the meal is bad because nobody seems to care, and that clearly was not the case at the Hamilton Street Grill, so I was interested in trying again.

Since I now buy my comics at the resturant’s next door neighboor [es] I’ve often been downtown during lunch hour with a bag full of reading to do. Last week I decided to head into the Hamilton Street Grill for lunch. Find out what I thought below the jump.

The lunch menu at the Hamilton Street Grill is much smaller than their dinner menu, but still had a lot of things that sounded good. I went for the pulled pork sandwhich with the sweet potato fries. Or they could have been yam fries, but either way they were good. As was the sandwhich.

Back in January I’d found the steak bland, but the sandwich was really good. Juicy and tender with a great sauce. The lunch time meals aren’t that expensive, and certainly worth giving a try to if you’re interested in finding a good place to eat in the Yaletown area. You’ll end up paying about the same amount you’d pay at a chain like Milestones or Red Robins’ but the food is a notch above that.

Which leaves me wondering what happened back in January? Did I just eat there on an off night? I’m going to give their steak another shot, because I love me a steak and I keep hearing they’ve got one of the best in Vancouver.

Glad you decided to give it another try.

I am on a competive BBQ team ( I think this will be an Olympic demonstration sptort one day ! ) and have picked up a few tricks from a Canadain Grand Master.

    Until next time,

I work a block away from the Hamilton Street Grill, so I’ve been there more times than I can count. The atmosphere is always good and I’ve found it a great place to drink, but I’ve never been impressed with the food. Too expensive for what you get – but then again I’m a vegetarian, so a steak restaurant isn’t exactly catering to my tastes.

    Dear chris,

I will look at what we have to offer to vegetarians and perhaps I can work on that.

Only one percent of our guests order the vegetarian meal………….hard to tell if it is just that we are not getting vegetarians, or they do not dig what we offer. I am not the best person to judge what vegetaraians eat, as I LOVE TO EAT STEAK!

    I am open to ideas.

I recently had dinner at the HSG on July 11 and it was a really uneven experience, doubt I will bother to ever return. Ok, it was the hottest night of the year but the service was indifferent at best and barely there. Began with a crab cake starter that was VERY bad, took a few nibbles and left it. Waiter removed plate without asking if there was a problem with the food. We arrived about 9PM and the place had about 10 customers but the kitchen put out our entrees in a time frame so slow that it made me wonder if the place was already closed. When my rib eye came the waiter informed me that they had cooked it cajun style instead of what I ordered, would it be ok? By this time I just wanted my dinner and said yes, when it arrived the prawns I ordered with it where no where to be found. By this point I guess I just didn’t want them anyways. On a positive note the rib eye was very tasty but I just can’t overlook the overall experience which was not good. It’s my hard earned money being spent and I just can’t recommend the HSG after my experience.

I have followed up on this with my server, Ryan.

I was out of town for a few days and it would appear that not everyone is as on their game as when the boss is in the building.

Please call me when you get and chance and we can discuss this.

I know the name of the person whose credit card this was on, so if you tell me that, I will know it is you.
