7 things about the ‘Burbs – Burnaby & McGill Library

Burnaby Library
I’m really not much of a library visitor. I kind of forgot about the library when I found I could research stuff online and then when I started ordering books on the internet, I thought the library was obsolete. It wasn’t until I realized you could borrow DVDs for free that I decided I should head back to the library.

I’ve lived in Burnaby now for a year and a half and had to ask someone where the library was. The building reminds me of a building from the 70s. Once I got inside, I found it to be quite modern and comfortable. There’s a huge window at the back of the library with a view of the playing fields.

It turns out it’s part of a big complex where the rec centre is as well. I’ll have to visit the rest of the complex soon.

Also, in addition to the free DVD rentals, turns out there’s books there that you can borrow and if you lose interest in the reading material you borrowed, you can return it and not have it sit on your desk for months and months cluttering up the place. I’m shameful, I know. I live 10 minutes away from a pretty great library and will go there for more than just the DVDs from now on.

McGill is a lovely library. The reason it looks like a building from the 70s is because it is, more or less, only they massively renovated the thing a few years ago. It roughly doubled the size of the library, and added those lovely giant windows looking over the playing field.

The Metrotown branch, which is the main one, has a very nice main reading room, but the Port Moody library has a little reading nook beside the fireplace! With built-in love seats on either side! It’s pretty much the cutest reading space in any library that I have seen.

The McGill library’s in my ‘hood. It’s fun watching Sunday afternoon soccer games no matter what the weather (you can keep cool when it’s too hot out and keep dry when it’s raining).

Ryan: I used to work at the Port Moody Library, and it’s a great space with a board room that you can reserve for quiet meetings or study.

    A fireplace reading nook? Dreamy…
