Cheat death and get a good telephone number

Telephone numbers are pretty picked over in the lower mainland. Most people are starting to accept that the 778 area code doesn’t give you mind cancer or the bends, but it’s pretty hard to get a really good number these days even with the newer area code. So how do you find a good number if you’re needing a new one?

Well if you’re not one for superstition then ask for a number with 4s in it. A number of Asian cultures see the number as unlucky, even though in some parts of China it used to be considered a sign of good fortune [wp]. Now though since it’s sounds like the word “death” it’s sort of out of vogue. So if you’re a brave sort you could get a half decent number by cheating death.

Ironically repeating 6s are hard to get, especially the triple 6. Too many heavy metal fans in this city I suppose.

Remembering, of course, that 666 is the rather appropriate prefix for federal government telephone numbers in Vancouver.

Both 8’s and 6’s (to lesser degree) are lucky in Chinese, so 666 could be the domain of either the metalheads or a real estate agent catering to Asian immigrants — either one would make a lot of sense.

The specific number combinations which sound like whole phrases and sentences in Chinese are really interesting — worth some research if you’re curious about it. There’s almost a whole language embedded in the numbers.
