Invites for Metroblogging readers

Spock Trek

Posting about the Techcouver map yesterday [mbv] got me thinking of Web 2.0 stuff, and I realized I’ve got a few invites for a few new services kicking around my inbox. So even though these aren’t Vancouver specific sites, I’m going to put the invites out there for any readers who are interested. If you want either of these invites just shoot me an email [jks].

The two services, Spock and Pownce, are described after the break.

The first is Spock [sp], the new social search. It’s sort of hard to explain, it’s like a search like Google that can be edited by users. Imagine Yahoo and Wikipedia having babies, and those babies being named after a Star Trek character and you sort of get what’s going on. It’s focus is mainly on people, so if you search for Vancouver the first two results are George Vancouver followed by Trevor Linden [sp].

The second is Pownce [pw], which is like Twitter and the like but more focused on instant messages and sending larger files between users. The development team includes Digger Kevin Rose and it’s actually pretty fun. It’s not quite as social and public as Twitter, but if you’ve got a group of friends, co-workers or people working on a project then it’s a good tool for communicating fast. I can’t quite wrangle a Vancouver connection on this one.

If you are concerned about your privacy then check out Spook. It picked up information from Friendster that I had set to private, do not display. Yet there is my private info on Spock for the world to see.
