The Vancouver Five: Overwaitea’s demands
With the Overwaitea Food Group, which also operates PriceSmart, Save-On-Foods and Urban Fare, demanding the ability to assign two hour shifts to its employees in the newest union contract [cbc], Metroblogging Vancouver discovered a few other things that the Jimmy Pattison-owned company is asking for.
5) Jim Pattison able to take any employee as a pool boy / happy ending masseuse.
4) New Save-On-Foods uniform includes bindle.
3) Employees to refer to high-end Urban Fare customers as “Your Highness”.
2) The period between an employee’s heart beats now considered part of their break.1) Mandatory organ donor program to ensure management’s survival.

I see someone is a employee? or taking a pro-union stance?
I’d call it anti-ridiculous.
Yeah, who the hell do they think they are! Trying to run their business efficiently… criminals! Its not as if employees have any sort of choice in the matter. Oh, wait.
I see someone is a idiot… taking a pro-poverty stance.
While I disagree at some of the antics the company is taking, you should see some of the crap the union is trying to gain. What a joke. What you are hearing is typical union vs company tactics and vice versa. Look at what the union is proposing to the company.

Pro-poverty? My point is that if you don’t want to work a two hour shift, no one is forcing you to. It’s not the duty of corporations to keep people from being poor at their own expense. It is the duty of corporations to make money. People are responsible for their own welfare, which means you choose the job you want, and if you aren’t satisfied you can quit. If you try to force Overwaitea to make poor business decisions, they will go out of business, then we’d all be screwed and the "poor" people would be even worse off because they’d have no job at all.
once upon a time, i worked for urban fare.
i loved the job itself and the store was pretty nice to work in…even though i could barely afford to buy anything there.
anyways, the only reason why they would even need a 2 hour shift is because so many people quit with no notice or call in sick all the time cos they really dont care about their job there.
also, they try to ensure that nearly every employee works a maximum of 39 hours/week. if someone doesnt show up for their shift, it becomes very difficult to fill that void without bumping another employee up to 40 hrs that week; and presently, no shifts less than 4 hours are possible.
if their employees valued their jobs more, i feel this would be less of a problem. they might actually show up.
of course the employer cant MAKE someone value their job, but they could make the job more worthwhile with better pay and/or benefits. i would have continued to work there if i could have actually had a decent life with the wage i was receiving.
and finally, i volunteered to work many split shifts to help to company out when the problem occured where they didnt have enough staff to cover unexpected shortages. im sure there will always be someone willing to do this; i dont think a 2 hour shift is necessary.
The law used to be that employers had to give employees 4 hours minimum Kiss A_s Campbell changed that to 2 hours.
If the management can’t plan labour requirements with minimum 4 hour shifts they should all be fired. Jimmy is probably going senile–he looks it.
