It would be nice to have the public's right to a safe society take precedence over the rights of convicted criminals.

I was driving along in my Surrey neighborhood and saw a black suburban suddenly turn at the intersection in front of me. It didn't register until I saw the flashing lights of a RCMP squad car chase after it for a block and a half until it finally stopped.

After that I couldn't shake the thought that perhaps the suburban may just start shooting all over the place... I high-tailed it out of there.

Later that night, I heard the news where two people were shot down at 72nd at the Strawberry Hill Mall... I shudder just thinking about it.

Let's hope that in the midst of all of this that the powers that be find a way to manage it... or at least contain it for a little while. I'd like to take a nice, relaxing walk outside this summer.

I was listening to CBC's Cross Country Check Up today and some callers were talking about the need to create a 'solution' that would stop violence at its 'source.' But I had an epiphany while listening as I realized that addiction, poverty, violence, and crime have been with humanity from day one. When you move past the presumption that we can 'solve' society's problems, the only obvious conclusion is that we must do our best to 'manage' them. Policing and enforcement, tough criminal sentences and a society that takes a less permissive, live-and-let-live attitude to destructive behaviors might just be necessary. Will Vancouver hit a tipping point?
