At 9:30 this morning over 13,000 people ran/walked/strolled 1 and 5km in support of Breast Cancer Research in the 2006 CIBC Run for the Cure. It wasn’t just Run day in Vancouver - this takes place in 51 communities across Canada.

This is the second year that I’ve participated in the event and it’s always a good time. Mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, young, old and even doggies. The route started and ended a BC Place, looping a bit through Chinatown, around False Creek (past Science World) and over the Cambie Bridge. Afterward, inside BC Place, sponsors setup booths, gave away swag, and of course there was the food. Bagels, bananas, juice boxes, tea, coffee and muffins.

A couple bands played and then the announcements were made - fastest male & female - and then various awards were handed out for most donations raised. The corporate team that received this award raised over $45,000 (Raymond James). They also recognized the top school team (Handsworth Secondary), women’s team and top single/individual fundraiser who then made a speech. He said it was easy for him to email investment clients and rake in the donations but he really admires those who have bake sales etc., scraping together what they can. In spirit of this - he passed on his prize/award to the next top individual.

It was a complete success and before we left we heard the preliminary totals… $1.4 million (as of Sept. 29th) and there were still donations pouring in. Thanks to everyone who was involved (volunteers, participants, sponsors etc.) it was a fantastic SUNNY morning in Vancouver.
