Vancouver Webcams

The Katkam has always been #1 Vancouver webcam (in our eyes anyway). It’s spectacular Westward view of the Burrard Inlet/Burrard Bridge has been a staple on our Google homepages and is always one of the first links we send my husband’s relatives back home in the States.
As of the beginning of October the Katkam shared its technology with Vancouver.com and brought us a new view of the area.
This view of the North Shore includes Canada Place, Seabus terminal and the Inlet. While browsing around the site I also found some traffic cams in their webcam section.
Click on the link and a Google Map will appear with various points pinned across the lower mainland. If you click on a pin a close-to-live webcam of that roadway or intersection will appear, courtesy of the Ministry of Transportation.
Aside from being a helpful tool for tourists, potential visitors and those who you wish could be here, these view are also very helpful for locals. And although on a day like today all you can see is grey, check out the Katkam in the afternoon and sometimes you’ll see a spirit-lifting break in the clouds off to the West, bringing that little ray of hope to your gloomy afternoon.

I used the Katkam as a virtual window to Vancouver before I moved here. It was more or less the digital equivalent of being a fish in a plastic bag before you actually move to the new tank.
Now, in my current job here in Gastown where I don’t have a window, the Katkam (along with the far less interesting view of Jericho Beach) has remained my view, when I summon it on my screen (Konfabulator, Heads-Up-Display setting so it’s like the Mac OS X Dashboard). For my Aunt in Florida, it’s also her view to my day. She sometimes will send me an email that consists solely of “My, but doesn’t it look rainy for you today!”
