Late night eats

Getting something to eat while working the graveyard shift in downtown Vancouver can be a daunting task Streets are bare, lights are closed, and all that are left are the street cleaners and the odd RCMP squad car. Sure, you can go to Denny’s for Moons over my hammy or the Bread Bowl Chili at Tim Hortons. But it does get rather monotonous after awhile.

Thus began my search for the hole in the wall non-chain establishments open to weary eyed zombies like myself.

So far, here are my favorites:

1) Hamburger Mary’s on Davie. If you’re looking for something to stick your ribs (and to your arteries) order the Georgy Fries. Fresh cut french fries, topped up with Gravy, hamburger and cheddar cheese. So good!

2) Vera’s Burger Shack – Also on Davie. Open until 2 on weekends, I recommend the Vic Burger – “Double Meats, Double Cheese, Double Onions, Double Bypass” as it says on the menu

3) Denny’s – on Burrard. Open 24 hours, it’s probably your only choice if your lunch break is after 3AM. On a non-clubbing night, the great thing about Denny’s is that it usually doesn’t take long to get your food – usually 8 minutes for a nice burger platter.

4) Tim Hortons on Alberni St: The past 10 years, Tim Hortons has made a major expansion out west. I really don’t see what all the fuss is about, other than the fact that Tim Hortons killed all the BC doughnut companies – Nuffy’s, duffins etc. But then again, where else can you get a complete sandwich/soup/doughnut meal with a bread bowl for under eight dollars? Good Chili too.

Well, that’s about it. If you know of any other good places to eat late at night feel free to leave a comment. Us graveyard zombies need variety too!

Tim’s has been killing the mom&pop donut competition out east forever with their brand of addictive coffee (and now steeped tea) and TIMBITS. There really needs to be an alternative to a $4.00 coffee and Tim’s is it. =)

Suddenly I realize I’ve never tried eating after 2 am downtown Vancouver. I do think you’re missing an obvious category though, and that is pizza. Most pizza places deliver past one in the morning, if you time your ordering right the pizza should pull up to your door just as you’re getting your break and you can take it wherever you want to eat in the great outdoors.

Also 24 hour convience stores = Doritos and ice cream sandwiches.
