Canuck fever… the force that binds us… but only if we win.

Back in the early 90s when Vancouver was in the middle of their Stanley Cup run to the finals with the New York Rangers, I noticed that the city was indeed different. No matter how long you had been living in the city, no matter how long you had been living in Canada, EVERYONE and I mean everyone had one thing they can always talk about – our Vancouver Canucks. I had been working in an old folk’s home at the time and we even had one resident – a 104 year old Italian immigrant who had this big thing for Trevor Linden. Every Canucks game during that run she would don her Linden Jersey. She would say with a gleam in her eye, “I lika thata Trebor leeenden! He bery bery good!”

During that run, we didn’t have any problems with gangs, racial violence and the like. In fact, you could see everyone from every single community in Vancouver celebrating in the streets with a win! It was a wonderful time and I never felt so proud being a Vancouverite during that magical run.

Today I saw the same thing after the win against Ottawa. people in the streets celebrating! People from all over yelling and screaming and beeping their horns and waving their flags. I can only hope that the Canucks will take it all the way to the cup this time around. It’ll be a fun run.
