Handel’s Messiah at the Orpheum

The first date that I ever had with my wife was taking her to see Handel’s Messiah at the historic Orpheum Theatre on Smithe. She hated movies and she didn’t like to see hockey games or anything like that. So, taking her to a live orchestra and choir was the next best thing. Needless to say, she was impressed! And after a short year we got married.

Naturally, we go see Handel’s Messiah every year as part of our Christmas Tradition and to relive those precious memories. Each year, I’ve noticed that people from all walks of life watch this concert. Old classical music enthusiasts, Parents bringing their kids, college students, teenagers, senior citizens… and all of them seem to appreciate the message and the feelings that this concert can bring during this time of the year.

Tonight was no different. This time around, we took our four year old son and he just loved it! Although he couldn’t last the whole show, he enjoyed the instruments, and the wonderful voices of the Vancouver Chamber Choir and the superb playing of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. I hope that we can continue this tradition each and every year as our children grow up. Hopefully the Orpheum and the VSO will still be here 40 years down the road!
