There goes the neighbourhood….

For the past month or so, the building at the corner of Balaclava and Broadway in Kitsilano has been under renovation. I’d been curiously anticipating the type of exciting new store about to be added to the neighbourhood, hoping for an interesting little shop I could frequent.

On my way home this evening I was really disappointed to discover that Tim Hortons is to be the new occupant of the space. My feelings have nothing to do with this restaurant chain in particular, but more because I liked that my neighbourhood was low on the fast food chain content. (There is an excessive amount of Starbucks coffee shops, but I digress…)

Now that there’s a new McDonald’s, and the soon-to-be Tim Hortons, I’m hoping this isn’t a sign of even more of these types of businesses moving in. It would be a shame because a neighbourhood, even a yuppified one like Kits, loses its unique flavour when there is a higher percentage of chains than independent businesses. Not that things are quite there yet, but…

That spot used to be a video rental store if I remember correctly (so also a chain business, just like the Subway, Blockbuster, Rogers, Safeway, and other places down the street). It also housed the campaign office for GC during the last provincial election. I’m glad there’ll be a Tim Hortons that much closer to where I live though!

Interesting… I was really excited that a Tim Horton’s was coming in. I’m tired of all the Starbucks and Blenz shops around here. Plus that stretch of block has so many empty or totally gross and dirty places that a Tim’s will be a welcome addition as far as I’m concerned!
