MY favorite sculpture.

The Device
In a shout out to Ryan and his favorite sculpture, I thought I’d write about my own (and fulfill the need for more photos on this blog).

I really enjoy the majestic arc of the “214-5Arcx14” by Bernar Venet, located on Sunset Beach. Made from oxidized steel, it’s rusted curves balance perfectly upon the sand and arc skywards to create a framed lookout point towards the water. It’s a sculpture that works well within the surrounding environment, and brings to mind the skeleton of a wrecked ship washed up on the beach.

The arc was installed as part of the Vancouver International Sculpture Biennale, an 18 month long installation of public art works that began in June 2005. The objective is “to engage Vancouver citizens and visitors in a citywide festival that celebrates the social value of public spaces and provides interactive cultural programming. To promote Vancouver and Canada as a dynamic cultural destination highlighting the unique outdoor lifestyle of the Pacific Northwest.”

The full map of all the sculpture locations and participating artists can be found here.

I noticed that sculpture today from the Burrard Bridge. It’s wonderfully striking.
