Mandalas and monks

My sister has been visiting for the just over a week now, and one of the places on my “must visit” list to take her has been the Museum of Anthropology. Tuesday evenings between 5 and 9 p.m. are free, so tonight was THE night to go. Unfortunately for us most of the museum galleries are under renovation, and even their open storage has been shifted around and isn’t as accessible as usual. But all this was made up for by the chance to watch two Tibetan monks begin the creation of a sand mandala.

The monks are here from the Drepung Gomang Monastery, and Vancouver is their last stop on a ten month tour to raise money and provide cultural awareness. They will continue to work on the mandala until it is completed on Sunday (April 23) around noon, then a special ceremony will be performed and the mandala will be swept away. Definately check it out if you get the chance.

Oh yay, I LOVE the MOA. Haven’t been there in a while and I was so sorry to miss this. Oh well.
