Itchy n’ scratchy
According to the GVRD Website, there is currently no health risk from mosquitoes carrying the West Nile Virus and potentially infecting the population due to the fact that no case of WNV has been reported anywhere in BC.
Despite these reassurances from The GVRD Mosquito Management Department, there is somebody in North Burnaby who thinks otherwise and is more than happy to oblige you with preventative measures to assuage your paranoia.
I’ve discovered that many apartments and houses in Vancouver have screenless windows. This is incredibly frustrating when you want to open your windows and you have a stupid cat who can’t land a jump properly and would very probably overshoot a window ledge and fall to his doom. Having watched one cat fall to its death, I really never want to go through that trauma again. As such, we never open our windows without first locking our cats away.
I have a feeling that, with our apartment, we will need to custom make screens. Back east, screens are pretty much standard everywhere. When I asked my mother why so many houses/apartments here don’t have them, she said it was due to a lack of bugs. Is that true?
Maybe. Mosquitos are not a very big problem in Vancouver.
I remember when I first moved to Vancouver from back east. I kept the windows open in my spare room and a few days later discovered a hornet nest. When I asked the landlord if she could put screens on the window she laughed, “You’re not from around here are you? We don’t have bugs.”
Vancouver is not a screen culture – the company has to say something to convince people that they need them.
